Reading Passage
A giraffe is the tallest land animal. One of its most famous body parts is its long neck.
A long neck helps a giraffe reach food high in trees. Giraffes often eat leaves from acacia trees and other tall plants. Many smaller animals cannot reach these leaves.
This means giraffes can eat food that other animals may not get. When food near the ground is gone, high leaves can still be available. A long neck helps giraffes use this food source.
A long neck can also help a giraffe see far across open land. From high above the ground, a giraffe may see other animals, trees, or danger in the distance.
Male giraffes also use their necks in a behavior called necking. They swing their necks and heads when they compete with other males. This can help decide which male is stronger.
A giraffe's neck has seven neck bones, just like a human neck. The bones are much longer than ours.
Giraffes have long necks because this body shape helps them live in their environment. It helps them reach food, watch the land, and interact with other giraffes.
