Reading Passage
Mushrooms may look like plants, but they are not plants. They belong to a group of living things called fungi.
Plants make their own food from sunlight. Mushrooms do not do this. Instead, many mushrooms get food by breaking down dead leaves, wood, and other natural material. This makes them important decomposers.
The part of a mushroom that we see above the ground is only one part of the fungus. Much of the fungus can be hidden underground or inside wood. It grows as thin threads called mycelium.
Mushrooms help forests and gardens. When they break down dead material, they return nutrients to the soil. These nutrients can help plants grow.
Some mushrooms are safe to eat, but others are poisonous. It can be difficult to tell the difference. People should never eat wild mushrooms unless an expert says they are safe.
Mushrooms come in many colors, shapes, and sizes. Some are tiny, and some can grow very large. They are an important part of nature because they help recycle material and keep ecosystems healthy.
