Reading Passage
Goosebumps are small bumps that appear on the skin. They often show up on the arms, legs, or neck. Many people get goosebumps when they feel cold, scared, excited, or surprised.
Goosebumps happen because the body has a quick reaction. Under the skin, there are very tiny muscles connected to hairs. When these muscles tighten, they pull the hairs upward. The skin around each hair rises a little, and we see goosebumps.
Cold air is one common cause. When the body feels cold, it tries to protect itself. In animals with thick fur, raised hair can trap warm air near the body. This helps the animal stay warmer.
Humans do not have thick fur like many animals. Because of this, goosebumps do not keep us very warm. Still, the old body response remains.
Strong feelings can also cause goosebumps. A loud sound, a scary story, beautiful music, or an exciting moment may make the body react. The brain sends signals through the nervous system. These signals can make the tiny skin muscles tighten.
Goosebumps are usually harmless. They are a sign that the body is responding to cold air or strong emotion.
So, goosebumps are small skin bumps caused by tiny muscles. They remind us that the body can react quickly, even before we think about it.
