A lighthouse is a tall structure near water. It has a bright light at the top. The light helps ships know where land is.

Many lighthouses are built on a coast, on an island, or near dangerous rocks. Long ago, ships did not have modern computers or satellite maps. Sailors needed signs they could see from far away.

A lighthouse can guide a ship at night or in bad weather. Its light often flashes in a special pattern. One lighthouse may flash every five seconds. Another may flash two times, then pause.

These patterns work like a signal. A sailor can look at the light and know which lighthouse it is. This helps the ship stay away from rocks, shallow water, or the wrong path.

Some lighthouses also used bells or horns when fog made it hard to see. The sound helped sailors know that land or danger was near.

Today, ships use GPS, radar, and digital maps. Still, many lighthouses are kept because they are useful, beautiful, and important to history. People often visit old lighthouses to learn about life near the sea.
