Imagine opening a website in a small house far from a city. There are no internet cables along the road. A satellite connection may offer another way online.
A satellite carries communication equipment above Earth. It sends and receives signals. Many communication satellites use radio waves. These waves can travel through the air and empty space. They do not need a cable between the satellite and the ground.
At the house, an antenna connects with a satellite. Your request for a website travels through this link. In a simple satellite internet system, the satellite passes the request to a ground station. That station connects to internet networks on Earth.

The website's information returns through the system to your antenna. A router then shares the connection with devices in your home. The satellite is part of the journey; it does not store the whole internet.
Some satellites stay high above one area of Earth. Others move much closer to the planet. In a low-orbit network, equipment can switch between satellites as they move across the sky. Different systems use different routes for data.
A clear view of the sky matters. Trees and buildings can block the link between an antenna and a satellite. The equipment needs a suitable place to work.

Satellite internet helps connect some remote locations. A message on your screen may have made a trip above the clouds.
Key Vocabulary
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|

| signal | a wave that carries information | The antenna receives a signal. |
| antenna | equipment that sends or receives radio signals | The antenna needs a clear view of the sky. |
| remote | far from cities or other places | A remote house may be far from internet cables. |
| ground station | equipment on Earth that communicates with satellites | The ground station connects to internet networks. |
Reading Questions
- What kind of waves do many communication satellites use?
- What connects the satellite system to internet networks in the passage?
- Why can a tree near an antenna cause a problem?
- Does a satellite store the whole internet?
Answers
- They use radio waves.
- A ground station connects the system to internet networks on Earth.
- The tree can block the link between the antenna and a satellite.
- No. The satellite carries information for part of its journey.
Short Summary
Satellite internet uses equipment in space and on Earth to move information. Antennas exchange signals, and ground stations connect the system to internet networks.
