Reading Passage

The Great Wall of China is one of the most famous structures in the world. It stretches across parts of northern China. The wall was not built all at once. Different sections were built over many centuries.

Long ago, Chinese rulers wanted to protect their land. They built walls to help stop attacks from the north. Later, some rulers connected and repaired older walls. The Great Wall became a long system of walls, towers, and paths.

The wall was useful for defense. Soldiers could stand on watchtowers and look for danger. If they saw enemies, they could send signals. Smoke, fire, and flags helped messages travel from one place to another.

The Great Wall was built with many materials. In some places, workers used stone and brick. In other places, they used packed earth. The materials depended on what was available nearby.

The wall is also a symbol of hard work and history. Many people worked on it, including soldiers, farmers, and prisoners. Building and repairing the wall was difficult and dangerous.

Today, the Great Wall is a famous landmark. Many visitors go there to walk on parts of the wall and learn about Chinese history. It reminds people of ancient China, engineering, and the effort of many workers.
