Reading Passage
In winter, some animals seem to sleep for a very long time. This deep winter rest is called hibernation. It helps animals live when the weather is cold and food is hard to find.
Many animals eat plants, insects, seeds, or small animals. In winter, these foods may become scarce. Snow and ice can cover the ground. Cold weather also makes it harder for animals to stay warm.
Before winter comes, some animals eat a lot of food. Their bodies store extra energy as fat. Later, during hibernation, the animal uses this stored fat to stay alive.
During hibernation, an animal's body slows down. Its heartbeat becomes slower. Its breathing becomes slower too. Its body temperature may drop. Because the body is using less energy, the animal can survive for a long time without eating much.
Hibernation is not the same as normal sleep. A hibernating animal can be very hard to wake. Its body is in a special energy-saving state.
Different animals hibernate in different ways. Some animals sleep deeply for a long time. Others wake up sometimes and then rest again. Bears, ground squirrels, bats, and some frogs are examples of animals that rest through cold seasons in special ways.
Hibernation is a survival strategy. Instead of searching for food in dangerous cold weather, some animals slow their bodies down and wait for spring.

Reading Comprehension Questions
- What is hibernation?
- Why can food be hard to find in winter?
- What do some animals store before winter?
- What happens to the heartbeat during hibernation?
- Why is hibernation useful?
Answers
- Hibernation is a deep sleep-like state that helps some animals survive winter.
- Snow, ice, cold weather, and fewer plants or insects can make food hard to find.
- Some animals store extra energy as fat.
- The heartbeat becomes slower.
- Hibernation helps animals save energy and survive when food is scarce.
Short Summary
Some animals sleep through winter to save energy. During hibernation, the body slows down and uses stored fat until food becomes easier to find again.
