Clouds can look white, gray, or almost dark. The color depends on light and the thickness of the cloud.

A cloud is made of many tiny water drops or ice crystals. These drops and crystals are very small, but together they can fill a large part of the sky. When sunlight reaches a cloud, the tiny drops scatter the light in many directions.

Thin clouds often look white because a lot of sunlight can pass through them. The light spreads through the cloud and reaches our eyes. This makes the cloud look bright.

Thick clouds are different. They have many more water drops packed together. These drops scatter and block more sunlight. Less light reaches the bottom of the cloud. Because of this, the bottom can look gray.

Gray clouds often mean the cloud is thick and heavy with water. This can happen before rain or a storm. However, not every gray cloud brings rain. Sometimes a cloud looks gray because the sun is behind it or because the sky is already dark.

The cloud itself is not painted gray. It looks gray because less sunlight reaches our eyes from that part of the cloud.

So, clouds turn gray when they are thick enough to block more light. The darker color is a clue about light, water, and weather.
