Reading Passage
Rust is the reddish-brown material that can appear on some metal objects. You may see rust on old bikes, gates, tools, or nails.
Not every metal rusts in the same way. Rust usually forms on iron or steel. Steel contains iron, so it can rust too. Rust begins when iron meets oxygen and water.
When water stays on iron, oxygen from the air can react with the metal. This reaction slowly changes the iron into rust. Rust is a chemical change. The metal is not just dirty. Part of it has changed into a different material.
Rust can make metal weaker over time. A rusty nail may break more easily. A rusty bike chain may not move smoothly. This is why people try to protect metal objects.
Rust can happen faster in wet places. It can also happen faster near salty water, such as near the ocean. Salt helps water carry the reaction more easily.
Paint can protect metal by covering its surface. Oil can also keep water away. Keeping tools dry is another simple way to slow rust.
Rust is common, but it teaches an important science idea. Air, water, and metal can work together to make a new substance.

Key Vocabulary
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| metal | a hard material such as iron, steel, or aluminum | The gate is made of metal. |
| rust | reddish-brown material that forms on iron or steel | Rust appeared on the old bike. |
| oxygen | a gas in the air | Oxygen helps rust form. |
| chemical change | a change that makes a new substance | Rust is a chemical change. |
| protect | to keep something safe from damage | Paint can protect metal from rust. |
Reading Comprehension Questions

Answers
- Rust is reddish-brown.
- Rust usually forms on iron or steel.
- Water and oxygen help rust form.
- It is a chemical change because it makes a new substance.
- People can slow rust with paint, oil, or by keeping metal dry.
Short Summary
Metal rusts when iron or steel reacts with oxygen and water, making a reddish-brown new substance.
