Reading Passage
A solar eclipse is a special event in the sky. It happens when the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun. For a short time, the Moon blocks some of the Sun's light.
The Moon is much smaller than the Sun. But the Moon is also much closer to Earth. Because of this, it can look large enough to cover the Sun from our view.
During a solar eclipse, the Moon makes a shadow on Earth. People inside the darkest part of the shadow may see the Sun almost disappear. This is called a total solar eclipse. People in a lighter part of the shadow may see only part of the Sun covered.
A solar eclipse does not happen every month. The Moon travels in an orbit around Earth. This path is a little tilted. Most months, the Moon passes above or below the Sun from our view.
When the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up just right, a solar eclipse can happen. It usually lasts only a few minutes in one place.
It is important to protect your eyes during a solar eclipse. Looking straight at the Sun can hurt your eyes. People need special eclipse glasses or other safe tools.
A solar eclipse shows how the Sun, Moon, and Earth move together in space. It is rare, short, and exciting to watch safely.
