Reading Passage

The Moon looks different during the month. Sometimes it is round and bright. Sometimes it looks like a thin curve. But the Moon does not really change shape.

The Moon looks bright because it reflects sunlight. One half of the Moon is always lit by the Sun. The other half is dark. As the Moon moves around Earth, we see different parts of the lit side.

This changing view is called a phase. A new moon happens when the lit side mostly faces away from Earth. The Moon is still there, but it is hard to see.

After that, more of the lit side becomes visible each night. This is called waxing. The Moon may look like a crescent, then a half moon, and then almost full. A crescent moon is one of the easiest phases to notice.

A full moon happens when we can see the whole lit side of the Moon. It looks round and bright in the night sky. After the full moon, the lit part we see becomes smaller. This is called waning.

The Moon takes about one month to orbit Earth. Because of this, the phases repeat again and again.

The Moon's changing shape is really a changing view. The Sun lights the Moon, the Moon moves around Earth, and our view changes night by night.
