Reading Passage

Ants are small, but they are very good at finding food. They do not use maps or signs. Instead, ants use smell, teamwork, and simple communication.

When ants leave the nest, some ants act as scouts. A scout ant walks around and searches for food. It may find a piece of fruit, a seed, or a tiny crumb.

When the scout finds food, it returns to the nest. On the way back, it leaves a smell trail on the ground. This trail is made of chemicals called pheromones. Other ants can smell the trail and follow it.

If the food is good, more ants follow the same trail. As they walk, they add more pheromones. This makes the trail stronger. A stronger trail tells more ants, "Food is this way."

If the food disappears, ants stop adding smell to the trail. Over time, the smell becomes weaker and weaker. Then fewer ants follow it. In this way, ants can change their behavior when the food is gone.

Ants also use touch. They may tap each other with their antennae. Antennae help ants smell, touch, and learn about the world around them.

Finding food is not one ant's job. It is a group effort. Ants work together, follow scent trails, and share information quickly with the colony.

Ants show how simple signals can create smart teamwork. A tiny smell trail can lead a whole colony to food.
