A river is moving water that flows across the land. It may look calm, but moving water has power. Over a long time, a river can change the shape of the land.

One way a river changes land is through erosion. As water moves, it can break small pieces from rocks and soil. Fast water can carry more material than slow water. This can make a river channel deeper or wider.

Rivers also carry sediment. Sediment can move along the bottom of the river or float in the water. When the river slows down, some sediment falls to the ground. This process can build new land.

Rivers can make valleys as they cut through the land. They can also make curves called bends. Near the sea, a river may drop a lot of sediment and form a delta.

The shape of a river can also change after heavy rain. More water can move faster and push more soil downstream. In dry seasons, the river may become slower and leave more sand or mud behind.

These changes do not usually happen in one day. Rivers shape the land slowly, year after year. A river is both a path for water and a natural tool that changes Earth.
