Tears are drops of liquid from our eyes. We may notice tears when we cry, but our eyes use tears all the time.

Tears keep the eye wet. The eye has a clear surface that needs moisture. If the eye gets too dry, it can feel sore or scratchy.

Tears also help clean the eye. If dust or smoke touches the eye, more tears may come. The tears can wash small pieces away.

Every time we blink, a thin layer of tears spreads over the eye. This helps the eye stay smooth and clear. Blinking and tears work together.

Tears can also help protect the eye. They have natural chemicals that fight some germs. This does not stop every problem, but it helps keep the eye healthier.
